I never saw an elm tree growing up in Hawai'i. Never had them there. And yet, there's something so aesthetically right about them, so Platonic in their treeness that I noticed and loved them in New York long before I knew what they were. The Mall in Central Park is one of the most sublime places in the world in all seasons, but in winter, in the snow, the elm trees outdo themselves.
